Freshman Hannah Rutten Breaks Record at NAU Pentathlon

A true freshman just announced her arrival in college swimming with a record-breaking performance that has Northern Arizona buzzing.

Hannah Rutten claimed the overall title at NAU's 31st annual Pentathlon on September 18, racking up 4,130 points across five swimming events. She didn't just win—she shattered the meet record in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:21.36.

The Pentathlon tests swimmers across five different events, awarding points based on their times in each race. Rutten took first place in three events: the record-breaking IM, the 100-meter backstroke (1:05.00), and the 100-meter freestyle (59.61).

Her performance put her ahead of defending champion Kaci Kelaher, a junior who finished second overall with 3,920 points. Sophomore Summer Ferguson rounded out the top three with 3,710 points.

The meet serves as more than just a competition. It's an important measuring tool for head coach Andy Johns and his staff, helping them evaluate progress and prepare for the regular season ahead.
