From Reserve Team to £123M: Barcola's Liverpool Move

Bradley Barcola was stuck in Lyon's reserve team in late 2022, his promising career seemingly stalled at age 20. Today, Liverpool is paying £123 million to bring him to the Premier League.

The French winger's turnaround began with an unexpected break. When Lyon teammate Karl Toko Ekambi kicked a rubbish bin in frustration after being substituted and never played for the club again, Barcola seized his opportunity to return to the first team.

He started most of Lyon's remaining matches that season, scoring five goals including a memorable winner against Paris Saint-Germain in April 2023. Five months later, PSG paid £38.5 million to make him their own player.

The timing was perfect for both sides. Brazil star Neymar had just left for Saudi Arabia, and Lyon was struggling financially and couldn't sign replacements. Barcola, nicknamed "the grasshopper" for his speed and agility, returned to face his old club in his PSG debut.

"PSG boss Luis Enrique asked Barcola, who was very young at the time, if he was ready to play," recalls French football journalist Pierre-Etienne Minonzio. "He said yes, came on as a substitute, and it was impressive."

Since then, Barcola has won three French league titles and two Champions League trophies. He broke into the France national team two years ago and scored three times at this summer's World Cup as they reached the semifinals.

Barcola's family has been central to his journey from the playing fields of Vaulx-en-Velin, east of Lyon, to football's biggest stages. His mother encouraged him and his older brother Malcolm, now a goalkeeper for Togo, to take up the sport and filmed all their matches.

His father Yves would gather the family in their living room to watch match clips together. He made Bradley practice finishing while Malcolm worked on his goalkeeping skills.

When critics hammered Barcola for missing chances against Newcastle in the Champions League during his first PSG season, he leaned on that family foundation. "My parents and I talk about everything," he told French newspaper Le Parisien.

French journalist Minonzio sees Barcola as part of a new generation. "He is hugely ambitious and prepared to work hard to be a better version of himself. They don't ask questions, they just do it."

From nearly moving to Swiss club St Gallen for playing time to becoming Liverpool's third £100 million signing, Barcola proves that one opportunity can change everything when you're ready to grab it.
