Game Show Win Launched Coach to Champions League Glory

Valdas Dambrauskas will walk onto the Old Trafford pitch Thursday night as a Champions League manager, completing a journey that started with a game show and grit.

In 2002, the then 25-year-old won 4,000 litas (about $725) on Lithuania's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. While most contestants might celebrate with a vacation, Dambrauskas bought a one-way ticket to London to pursue coaching badges.

He arrived in August 2002 with limited English and big dreams. What followed were eight years of relentless hustle that would make most people quit.

Dambrauskas juggled two, three, sometimes four jobs simultaneously while raising two children. He worked as a gardener, delivered newspapers, polished pub floors, and managed retail shifts between coaching gigs.

"England sounds like opportunities to me," Dambrauskas told BBC Sport. "It was really amazing and I'll forever be grateful."

In 2004, he enrolled at London Metropolitan University for sports science while volunteering with underprivileged kids in Finsbury Park. He coached semi-professional teams, earned his UEFA license, and became the first Lithuanian to achieve a coaching qualification through the London Football Association.

His first professional break came from Manchester United Soccer Schools in 2004. "I went through three or four interviews," he said, crediting Foundation chief John Shiels for taking a chance on an inexperienced immigrant coach.

For five years, Dambrauskas ran residential coaching courses across the UK and Europe for United. He later worked at Fulham and Brentford, soaking up knowledge wherever he could find it.

Why This Inspires

Dambrauskas never stopped learning or working. He attended every coaching conference, every workshop, every meeting that might add to his knowledge. While others saw obstacles, he saw stepping stones.

His nomadic coaching career took him across Europe, winning 13 trophies in five countries. Now he manages Sabah, an Azerbaijani club making their Champions League debut.

The man who once coached kids at United's summer camps will face them as an equal Thursday night. In January, Sabah travels to Arsenal, the stadium Dambrauskas could see from his university building on Holloway Road all those years ago.

"This is beyond my imagination," he said about returning to Old Trafford. "I've been many times with the kids, and now I'm coming as a coach."

From game show contestant to Champions League manager, Dambrauskas proved that opportunity isn't given—it's created through relentless determination and a willingness to start from zero.
