Gary Ablett Jr Joins Dad in Australian Football Hall of Fame

Twenty-one years after watching his father receive football's highest honor, Gary Ablett Jr walked the same path into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

The Geelong and Gold Coast champion was inducted Tuesday night in Melbourne alongside West Coast legend John Worsfold, Essendon's games record holder Dustin Fletcher, and three other contributors who transformed Australian rules football. Bill Walker, a four-time Sandover Medal winner, was elevated to Legend status at the gala event.

Ablett Jr faced enormous pressure when he joined Geelong in 2001 as a father-son selection. His dad, known as "God" at the club, had kicked 1031 goals and built a legacy that seemed impossible to match.

But the son didn't just live up to the name. He carved his own path to greatness across 357 games, winning two Brownlow Medals and two premierships with the Cats in 2007 and 2009.

When Gold Coast entered the league in 2011, Ablett became the expansion team's marquee signing and captain. He spent six years building the Suns program before returning to Geelong for a triumphant final chapter from 2018 to 2020.

His last game nearly delivered a fairytale ending. Five minutes into the 2020 grand final, Ablett broke his shoulder but stayed on the field, though Richmond eventually won. The image of "The Little Master" battling through injury in his final moments captured everything about his playing style.

The numbers tell only part of the story: eight All-Australian selections, five MVP awards from the players association, and three coach's champion player honors. But Ablett's real legacy lives in how he honored his family name while building his own.
