Gen Z Brings Malls Back With 57% Foot Traffic Surge
After years of decline, American malls are thriving again thanks to Gen Z shoppers craving real-world connection. The generation that grew up online is choosing physical stores over screens, visiting malls weekly for shopping and socializing.
The American mall is alive and well, and Gen Z is leading its comeback.
Foot traffic at malls has surged 57% as young shoppers trade their screens for storefronts, according to PwC. The same generation that grew up shopping online is now choosing physical stores for 62% of their purchases, Circana reports.
The reason? They want to actually see what they're buying.
"I like that I can actually see the outfits that I am getting in person rather than ordering online. I can see the quality," one Gen Z shopper told ABC 7 Detroit. Another added they prefer to "try stuff on and really get a feel for the clothes because I feel like that's the thing that's lacking online shopping."
But shopping is only part of the appeal. Gen Zers are visiting malls once or twice a week, turning these trips into full social experiences.

"You can kind of make a day out of it. You can go for a couple hours, get something to eat. Maybe get a matcha or a coffee," one teen explained. They're reclaiming something their parents took for granted: a physical place to gather with friends.
Elizabeth Lafontaine, director of research at Placer.ai, connects the dots. "The resurgence of the mall category directly correlates with Gen Z shoppers' desire for community and in-person connection," she told USA Today.
Bloomberg reporter Lily Meier points out the timing makes sense. "For many of Gen Z's formative years, they were stuck at home, they were communicating via Zoom, they were going to school on Zoom," she said. Now they're excited about "doing a lot of the nostalgic activities" their parents remember, including mall hangouts.
The Ripple Effect
The mall renaissance is creating spaces Gen Z desperately needs. After years of isolated digital connection during COVID, young people are rediscovering the value of wandering stores, people watching, and bumping into friends.
Gen Xers who grew up at Orange Julius stands are thrilled. "That is why the mall still matters as a third space: it teaches taste, proportion, presence, and social rhythm," one parent wrote. "Online gives you images. The mall gives you people."
The generation raised on smartphones is teaching the rest of us something important: sometimes the best connection requires showing up in person.
