Nigerian Journalists Honor Late Leader with New Prize

When Dotun Oladipo died suddenly in August at age 56, he was planning to sign paperwork to help a colleague travel abroad. It was typical of the man who led Nigeria's Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) for four years and never stopped showing up for others.

Now his peers are ensuring his legacy lives on. The Guild announced this week it will create the Dotun Oladipo Prize for Online Journalism to recognize excellence in digital reporting across Nigeria.

Deputy President Olumide Iyanda shared the news Thursday at a memorial service in Lagos. "The prize will recognize outstanding online journalism in Nigeria and keep alive the values Dotun represented as a journalist, publisher and leader," he told attendees.

Oladipo founded and published The Eagle Online and helped establish GOCOP, serving as its president from 2017 to 2021. But what colleagues remember most wasn't his titles or achievements. It was his constant willingness to help.

On the morning he died, Oladipo was heading to his office partly to sign that guarantor form. He was also arranging hotel rooms for members traveling to the Guild's October conference. "He could be involved in the big decisions and still worry about where a colleague would sleep," Iyanda said.

The Ripple Effect

Stories from the memorial painted a picture of someone who made service his daily practice. Oladipo chaired GOCOP's Constitution Review Committee while still finding time for small acts of support. Colleagues called him their "dealmaker, peacemaker and joy giver."

The impact of one person choosing kindness over and over creates waves that touch dozens of lives. Oladipo's widow Taiwo and their children shared him with an entire profession. Now hundreds of journalists benefit from the culture of mutual support he helped build.

The new journalism prize will formalize what Oladipo practiced informally every day: recognizing and elevating good work in others. Details are still being developed, but the Guild plans to launch it as a permanent tribute.

At the service, senior journalists from across Nigeria gathered to honor their friend. Current and former Guild of Editors presidents attended, along with government officials and media leaders. All came to celebrate a life spent lifting others.

"We cannot replace him," Iyanda said. "We can only remember him and try to be there for others the way he was there for us." That's exactly what the prize aims to do.
