Nigeria and Thailand Partner to Transform Cooperatives

Two nations separated by 5,000 miles just joined forces to revolutionize how communities build wealth together.

Nigeria and Thailand signed major cooperation agreements in Lagos this week, focusing on agriculture, cooperatives, and innovation. The partnership directly supports Nigeria's Renewed Hope Cooperative Reform and Revamp Programme, a nationwide effort to strengthen cooperative institutions by 2030.

The agreements include collaboration between Thailand's International Cooperation Agency, Kasetsart University, and Nigeria's Federal Cooperative College in Oji-River. Senator Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Nigeria's Minister of State for Agriculture, called it "a partnership founded on knowledge, capacity development, innovation, and shared prosperity."

At the heart of the initiative is a simple idea: strong cooperatives need strong institutions and well-trained people. The program emphasizes developing leadership skills and professional competence among cooperative leaders, managers, and members across Nigeria.

This marks the second major implementation milestone for the reform program. In August, Nigeria's ministry signed another agreement on cooperative digitalization, showing steady progress from planning to action.

The Ripple Effect

The timing connects to President Bola Tinubu's ambitious goal of building a one-trillion-dollar Nigerian economy this decade. Cooperatives serve millions of Nigerians, making their transformation crucial for agricultural growth, job creation, financial inclusion, and sustainable livelihoods.

Thailand brings decades of experience in agricultural innovation and cooperative development. Nigeria contributes enormous agricultural potential, a young and vibrant population, and significant investment opportunities. Together, they're creating a framework for mutual learning and shared success.

The high-level event in Lagos brought together impressive representation from both nations. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister attended alongside Nigeria's Foreign Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, ambassadors from both countries, and leaders from key agricultural and educational institutions.

Minister Abdullahi challenged all involved institutions to move "deliberately from agreement to implementation" with practical programs, clear timelines, and measurable results. The focus now shifts to turning signatures into tangible outcomes that improve lives.

The reform framework spans seven pillars designed to reposition Nigeria's cooperative sector as an engine for inclusive economic growth and distributed prosperity. This partnership strengthens Pillar 2, which focuses on institutional strengthening and capacity building.
