Millions of women with breast cancer could soon avoid chemotherapy and its devastating side effects, thanks to a genomic test that predicts who truly needs it and who doesn't.

Professor Rob Stein from University College London, who led the trial, explains how this changes everything. "Our findings show that many patients can safely avoid chemotherapy without compromising their outcomes," he said. The test analyzes 50 genes in tumor tissue to determine each patient's individual risk.

The breakthrough specifically helps patients with hormone-positive breast cancer, the most common form accounting for up to 80% of all breast cancer cases worldwide. For decades, these patients faced a difficult choice between accepting chemotherapy's harsh side effects or worrying about cancer returning.

One trial participant described learning she could skip chemotherapy as feeling "like Christmas." Nine years later, she's healthy and living an active, full life.
