Georgia Math Scores Hit All-Time Highs in 4 Grades

Georgia students just shattered math achievement records, with fourth, fifth, and sixth graders plus high school Algebra students reaching all-time highs on state assessments. It's a milestone moment that reflects years of hard work by teachers, students, and families across the Peach State.

The 2025-2026 Georgia Milestones test results showed improvement or steady performance on 12 of 13 assessments. Math led the way with six of seven tests showing gains, while all four science assessments and both social studies tests either improved or held steady.

State School Superintendent Richard Woods credits the progress to Georgia's decision to replace Common Core with homegrown standards. "Getting rid of Common Core and moving to Georgia-owned and Georgia-grown standards has led to clear improvements over time for our students," Woods said.

The state didn't just change the tests and hope for the best. Georgia invested heavily in teacher training focused on how students actually learn, not just what they should learn. Regional teaching summits, leadership networks, and partnerships with educational service agencies gave educators the tools they needed to succeed.

New legislation championed by Governor Kemp also played a key role. Early literacy laws established stronger reading fundamentals that help learning across all subjects. The recently passed Math Matters Act will now expand advanced math pathways and bring more literacy coaches into schools statewide.

Teachers got access to practical classroom resources aligned to the new standards, plus coaching and technical assistance when they needed extra support. The state created an entire repository of instructional materials so educators didn't have to reinvent the wheel.

The Ripple Effect

When math scores rise across an entire state, the benefits extend far beyond test day. Students who master math fundamentals in elementary school are better prepared for algebra, which opens doors to advanced STEM courses in high school. Those opportunities lead to college readiness and careers in growing fields like engineering, technology, and healthcare.

Georgia's success also sends a powerful message to other states wrestling with education reform. Homegrown standards designed by local educators who understand their students can work better than one-size-fits-all national approaches.
