Georgia Teen Scores Perfect 1600 on SAT While Playing Football

Korry Sessoms walked into his SAT exam hoping to see where his skills stood, and walked out with a perfect 1600 score that fewer than one in 2,000 students ever achieve.

The New Manchester High School senior from Douglasville, Georgia, balances advanced academics with playing wide receiver for the Jaguars football team. Last school year, he scored around 1570 on a practice test and decided to take the real exam to see if he could push himself further.

Sessoms credits his success to the same discipline he uses on the football field, where he fought back after tearing his ACL last year. "Football teaches you accountability, consistency and discipline," he explained. "And that just correlates with studying academics."

His teammates celebrated the achievement without making him feel different. "They just congratulated me," Sessoms said. "Nothing like, oh yeah, you're nerdy."

For his parents, the moment carried extra meaning. "There is a world where individuals are celebrated and they're not just tolerated," said his mother, Walisa Sessoms. "For him, being a young black male, in a world where it can go a different way, it's refreshing to know that he has that support from his team and from us."

His father, Torry Sessoms, saw the achievement as proof of a simple truth. "It says to me that anything's possible as long as you put the work in," he said.

Why This Inspires

Korry's advice for other students cuts through the noise with refreshing honesty. "Don't worry about everyone else," he said. "Don't try to fit in. Just stay locked in. When you're in a class, don't be discouraged about a score. Keep trying. It will get better."

The 17-year-old loves math and history and dreams of studying engineering at Yale University before heading to law school. His parents hope he'll choose Georgia Tech, but either way, they're celebrating a young man who refused to choose between athletics and academics.

His perfect score opens doors to top universities nationwide, and his comeback from injury shows he knows how to handle pressure when it counts.
