German Firm Signs First Solar-Wind Energy Deal in Spain
A major energy company just proved renewable power can work around the clock by combining sunshine and wind into one smart contract. The breakthrough agreement delivers clean electricity 24 hours a day to half a million Spanish homes and businesses.
Getting clean energy when the sun doesn't shine has been renewable power's biggest challenge, but a German company just cracked the code with a clever solution.
Encavis, a renewable energy producer, signed its first hybrid power deal combining solar panels and wind turbines to supply Spanish energy company Visalia. The three-and-a-half-year contract will deliver 210 gigawatt hours of electricity, enough to power roughly 60,000 homes annually.
The electricity flows from five renewable sites near Zaragoza in northeastern Spain, where two solar parks and three wind farms work together like a tag team. When the sun sets and solar panels go quiet, wind turbines keep spinning to maintain the power supply.
This simple pairing solves one of renewable energy's trickiest problems. Solar farms produce lots of electricity during sunny afternoons but go dark at night, while wind often blows strongest after sunset and during cloudy weather.

Visalia operates more than 500 small renewable installations across Spain and will distribute this steady stream of clean power to homes and businesses throughout the country. The deal marks the first time Encavis has bundled different renewable sources into a single supply contract.
The Ripple Effect
Spain has become a testing ground for smarter renewable energy deals. The country's sunny climate and windy regions make it perfect for hybrid projects that maximize clean power generation.
Encavis already operates 1,000 megawatts of solar and wind capacity across Spain, and this agreement shows the company is betting big on combination approaches. By mixing generation sources, energy companies can offer more reliable service without burning fossil fuels or relying on batteries.
Europe is catching on fast. September 2024 saw three hybrid renewable contracts signed in a single month, the most ever recorded according to energy market analysts. Most of those deals paired solar or wind with battery storage, but direct solar-wind combinations like this Spanish agreement could become the new standard.
The approach makes renewable energy more practical for everyday use. Customers get consistent power, energy companies can plan supply more accurately, and the planet gets cleaner air.
