German Village Slashes Energy Bills With Wind Power

While most communities struggle with rising energy costs, one tiny German village figured out how to escape the grid entirely and slash its power bills to nearly nothing.

Feldheim, a cluster of buildings surrounded by fields about 90 minutes from Berlin, has become Germany's first energy autonomous village. Its 130 residents generate all their own electricity from 52 towering wind turbines and pay far less than their neighbors for power that's completely clean.

The transformation began in the 1990s after German reunification, when a young civil engineering student named Michael Raschemann had an idea. He wanted to build wind turbines to power his community, and when his father refused to help finance the plan, his mother stepped in as guarantor for the loan.

Today, those turbines stand like gentle giants above the canola fields. They're surprisingly quiet, using gearless technology that produces only a soft swoosh from blades longer than a Boeing 737. Birds sing underneath them while farmers work the land as they have for centuries.
