Germany and Ukraine Partner to Build Long-Range Drones

Two countries are teaming up to turn battlefield innovation into a global industry, and it could reshape how democracies defend themselves.

Germany and Ukraine announced plans on May 11 to jointly develop and produce drones ranging from short-range systems to long-range aircraft capable of flying up to 1,500 kilometers (932 miles). German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius made the announcement during a press conference with Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov in Kyiv.

Ukrainian and German companies are already working together on unmanned technologies. The new agreement expands that cooperation significantly, covering everything from drones that fly less than 62 miles to advanced long-range systems.

Germany is also joining Brave1, Ukraine's defense innovation platform that lets military technology developers rapidly test new systems in real battlefield conditions. Pistorius and Fedorov signed a letter of intent to launch Brave Germany, a joint initiative supporting defense technology startups.

The partnership goes both ways. Pistorius noted that working with Ukraine helps Germany strengthen its own industrial capacity and technological capabilities. Ukrainian defense innovations, forged under the pressure of real conflict, are attracting global attention for their practical effectiveness.

This collaboration represents more than just military hardware. Ukraine officially opened weapons exports in February and plans to establish 10 export centers across Europe this year. What started as urgent wartime necessity is becoming an innovation engine for the entire continent.

Pistorius emphasized that Europe's defense-industrial base needs strengthening, arguing that security and defense capabilities directly impact economic development and prosperity. Ukrainian technologies are now recognized worldwide as innovative solutions, driving advances that benefit all democratic nations facing security challenges.
