Germany Backs EVs With €3B Open to All Automakers

Germany is putting €3 billion on the table to help families go electric, and unlike other countries, they're not shutting anyone out.

The new subsidy program runs through 2029 and will help about 800,000 households buy or lease electric vehicles. What makes it remarkable is Germany's decision to welcome all manufacturers, including Chinese automakers, at a time when other nations are building walls.

Environment Minister Carsten Schneider explained the thinking simply: Chinese cars aren't flooding German roads, so why fear the competition? The country is choosing to strengthen its auto industry by facing challengers head-on rather than hiding behind restrictions.

The subsidies range from €1,500 to €6,000 based on household income and size, targeting lower and middle-income families who need the most help making the switch. The program even covers plug-in hybrids and range-extender models that meet emissions standards.

This comes after Germany abruptly ended its previous EV program in late 2023, causing electric car sales to plunge 27% in 2024. The recovery has been strong, with 545,000 new battery vehicles registered in 2025, surpassing 2023 numbers.

Germany's approach stands in sharp contrast to the UK, where similar programs essentially blocked Chinese manufacturers. Despite EU tariffs on Chinese imports, companies like BYD sold just 23,000 cars in Germany last year, less than 1% of the market, though that's eight times more than 2024.

The Ripple Effect: Germany's open-door policy does more than just boost EV adoption. It sends a message that the transition to clean transportation works best through innovation and competition, not trade barriers. When families can choose from the widest range of affordable electric vehicles, everyone wins: consumers get better options, manufacturers push each other to improve, and the climate benefits from faster adoption.
