World's tallest wind turbine towering 1,197 feet above landscape in Schipkau, Germany

Germany Builds Wind Turbine Taller Than Eiffel Tower

Mind Blown

A revolutionary wind turbine in Germany now towers 1,197 feet above eastern landscapes, surpassing the Eiffel Tower and promising to double clean energy production. The prototype harnesses stronger winds at extreme heights, offering a breakthrough solution for renewable power.

Germany just built the world's tallest wind turbine, and it could transform how we generate clean energy.

The colossal structure rises 1,197 feet above the countryside in Schipkau, southeast of Berlin. That makes it taller than the Eiffel Tower and nearly as tall as Berlin's famous television tower.

The turbine reaches full height at 365 meters, with its hub sitting at 300 meters and massive rotor blades extending above. Engineers from Dresden-based company Gicon completed the record-breaking prototype this week, with plans to inaugurate it in mid-November.

The extra height isn't just for show. At 300 meters up, winds blow stronger and more consistently than at conventional turbine heights.

"We can produce more than twice as much electrical energy as with the same facility at today's heights," said Jochen Grossmann, Gicon's chief executive. The turbine can also generate power for far more days of the year compared to existing models.

The location carries special meaning. Lusatia once stood as a major center for lignite coal mining, but the region has increasingly embraced renewable energy in recent years. This towering turbine marks another step in that transformation.

The Ripple Effect

The prototype's success could solve one of renewable energy's biggest challenges: finding enough suitable land for wind farms. Grossmann envisions "two-story" wind farms that combine shorter and taller turbines at existing sites, maximizing energy production without requiring new locations.

Germany desperately needs these innovations. The country switched off its last nuclear plants in 2023 and plans to eliminate coal power by 2038. Wind energy already provides 29.4% of Germany's electricity, making it the largest single source in a grid where renewables now supply 59.1% of total energy production.

If the prototype proves successful, Gicon plans to build wind farms with three to five extra-tall turbines. That could pave the way for full-scale production of these giants.

Workers still need to complete internal wiring before the November inauguration, but the tower itself stands ready to capture those powerful high-altitude winds and turn them into clean electricity for thousands of homes.

A former coal region is now home to the world's tallest wind turbine, proving that even the most dramatic energy transitions are possible.
