Germany Opens Bids for 475 MW Renewable Energy Tender

Germany is taking another big step toward a cleaner energy future by opening bids for 475 megawatts of renewable power projects. This represents the first half of a planned 950 MW tender for 2026, showing the country's commitment to expanding its green energy capacity.

The Innovation Tender stands out because it welcomes multiple renewable technologies under one umbrella. Solar farms, wind turbines, biomass plants, geothermal systems, hydroelectric facilities, and even energy storage projects can all compete for funding.

What makes this particularly innovative is that projects can combine different technologies. A solar farm paired with battery storage, for example, could bid alongside a traditional wind project. This flexibility encourages creative solutions that maximize clean energy production.

Solar installations on agricultural land are also welcome to participate, as long as total agrivoltaic capacity stays below 80 gigawatts. Current registrations sit at just 16.5 GW, leaving plenty of room for growth in this dual-use approach that produces both food and electricity.

Germany's Federal Network Agency will accept bids until May 4, 2026, with a price cap set at just over 7 cents per kilowatt-hour. This competitive process helps ensure taxpayers get the best value while accelerating the renewable energy transition.

The timing aligns with Germany's ambitious 2026 Climate Action Programme, backed by 8 billion euros in funding. The country aims to slash greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% from 1990 levels by 2030, and tenders like this help make that goal achievable.
