Germany's New Cologne Lab Speeds Green Cleaning Solutions

Companies developing the next generation of sustainable cleaning products just got a powerful new resource in Germany's industrial heartland.

IMCD Group opened modernized application labs at BioCampus Cologne this month, creating a collaborative space where chemists can fast-track eco-friendly formulations for home and industrial cleaning products. The facility also houses a coatings and construction lab, helping manufacturers develop greener paints, adhesives, and building materials.

The timing couldn't be better. Consumer demand for sustainable cleaning products has surged, but developing effective formulas that meet both environmental standards and performance expectations takes time and expertise. These labs cut that development time significantly by providing immediate access to specialized equipment, technical experts, and testing facilities.

The Home Care lab expanded into specialized zones for laundry care, dishwashing, surface cleaning, car care, and air care products. Meanwhile, the Coatings lab supports companies working on decorative paints, industrial coatings, construction materials, and printing inks. Both facilities offer hands-on formulation support, performance testing, and application training.

"We bring together formulation development, product performance testing, consulting and training in one location," explains Fanélie Jaeglé, Technical Director for Home Care. The setup means a company with an idea for a plant-based laundry detergent can walk through the entire development process without leaving the building.

BioCampus Cologne was chosen deliberately for its research infrastructure and connections to both academia and industry. The location plugs into the Rhineland's strong chemical and manufacturing network, giving companies access to raw material suppliers and market insights alongside lab capabilities.

The Cologne facility joins IMCD's global network of 27 specialized labs supporting sustainable product development. The Coatings lab, first established in Cologne in 2008, now connects to 13 sister facilities worldwide with over 50 technical experts. The Home Care lab links to 12 other locations focused on cleaning and care solutions.

The Ripple Effect

This kind of infrastructure matters beyond just faster product launches. When companies can test and refine sustainable formulations more efficiently, greener products reach store shelves sooner and at lower development costs. That makes eco-friendly options more affordable for everyday consumers.

The collaborative model also accelerates knowledge sharing across the industry. Technical teams from different companies can learn from each other's challenges and breakthroughs, raising the bar for everyone working toward more sustainable chemistry.
