Ghana Alumnus Funds $18.7M Dormitory for His Old School

When Ebenezer Kwadwo Saka Addo-Mensah graduated from Achimota School in Ghana, he never forgot where he got his start. Now, through his company Saka Homes, he's giving back in a big way.

Addo-Mensah is funding the entire construction of a 250-bed boys' dormitory at his former school. The project, valued at GH¢18.7 million (roughly $1.2 million USD), broke ground in early August and represents a milestone in Ghana's education financing.

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) launched its Education Financing and Partnership Initiative to encourage private citizens and companies to support school infrastructure. Saka Homes became the very first company to fully sponsor a complete project under this program.

GETFund Administrator Paul Adjei accepted the donation at a ceremony held at the school. He praised Addo-Mensah for demonstrating how alumni can transform education in their communities.

The new dormitory will include a central courtyard and modern facilities designed to create a safe, comfortable learning environment. The project addresses a critical need as many Ghanaian schools struggle with overcrowded or outdated housing for students.

The Ripple Effect

This donation could spark a movement across Ghana. By becoming the first to fully fund a GETFund project, Addo-Mensah has shown other successful alumni and business owners a clear path to make lasting change.

The partnership model allows private donors to direct resources exactly where they're needed while the government provides oversight and coordination. It's a win for students who get better facilities and a win for taxpayers whose education budgets can stretch further.
