Ghana Expands Cash Aid to 450,000 Families, Raises Grants

Ghana just gave 450,000 of its most vulnerable families a reason to hope with expanded cash support and higher payments designed to beat rising prices.

The government's Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty program, known as LEAP, now covers 100,000 more households than before. Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey announced the expansion on Monday, saying the program underwent a complete review to identify families still in need and celebrate those who climbed out of extreme poverty.

The best news? The grants got bigger and smarter. Average payments jumped significantly since 2024, and the program now uses an indexation mechanism that automatically adjusts payments when inflation rises, protecting families from losing buying power.

Under the new payment structure, even the smallest households receive meaningful support. Families with one or two members get between 380 and 392 Ghanaian cedis every two months, depending on whether they care for someone particularly vulnerable like an elderly person or child. Mid-sized families with three to four members receive between 452 and 474 cedis, while larger households with five or more members get the highest support at 594 to 630 cedis per cycle.

The program's recent reassessment using Ghana's National Household Registry brought encouraging news. More than 226,000 households graduated from extreme poverty, proving the program works while freeing up resources to help newly struggling families.

The Ripple Effect

This expansion reaches far beyond individual households. When families receive predictable cash support, children stay in school longer, healthcare visits increase, and small businesses get the customer base they need to thrive. The inflation-protection feature means these benefits won't disappear when prices rise, offering stability in uncertain times.
