Ghana Foundation Brings Free Ultrasounds to 154 Moms

In rural Ghana, a simple ultrasound scan can mean the difference between a healthy pregnancy and a preventable tragedy, but many women can't afford the trip to private labs in distant towns.

The Telecel Ghana Foundation just changed that for 154 pregnant women in the Gomoa Central District. Their mobile Rural Ultrasound Scan initiative brought free screenings, blood tests, and expert care directly to the Gomoa Obuasi Model Health Centre.

"Ultrasound scan costs are high for pregnant women in this district since they are conducted by private labs in the bigger towns," explained Eunice Kortey, the physician assistant in charge of the health center. Women identified with risk factors during the screening will now receive close monitoring throughout their pregnancies.

The program goes beyond just scans. Health workers provided group education on maternal nutrition, iron supplements, and why regular checkups matter so much. Women not already enrolled in care were registered on the spot and given their next appointment dates.

Sekina Hammond, a local pregnant resident, received more than a glimpse of her baby. "I am excited to know my unborn baby's current state and to learn about the best foods to eat for my blood level and my baby," she said after her screening.

The Ripple Effect

This bimonthly outreach tackles a global challenge at the community level. Maternal mortality remains tragically high in underserved areas where simple diagnostic tools could prevent complications before they become crises.

"This program is about preventing avoidable pregnancy complications through early detection, education and continuity of care," said Rita Rockson, Head of Foundation at Telecel Ghana. The initiative directly supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims to reduce maternal mortality worldwide.

The foundation also handed out care packages filled with essential newborn items, helping mothers prepare for the journey ahead. By bringing technology, education, and supplies to women who need them most, the program creates a safety net that extends far beyond a single checkup.

Every ultrasound represents a life potentially saved, a complication caught early, and a mother empowered with knowledge about her own health and her baby's wellbeing.
