Nigeria Expands Birth Control Access in Oyo State

Women across Oyo State, Nigeria are getting better access to safe, affordable birth control thanks to a new partnership between the state government and healthcare distributor VIYA Health.

The collaboration, announced in August 2026, focuses on expanding availability of Medogen SubQ, a WHO-prequalified contraceptive injection. The product meets strict international standards for safety and effectiveness.

Dr. Muideen Babatunde Olatunji, Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, welcomed the initiative at a meeting in Ibadan. He emphasized that the state has long supported innovative family planning programs and remains committed to investing in health commodities.

"The Oyo State Government remains committed to improving access to quality primary healthcare services for our people," Dr. Olatunji said. He noted that wider contraceptive access will help improve outcomes for mothers and children while supporting families in making informed decisions about their reproductive health.

VIYA Health distributes Medogen SubQ, manufactured by Incepta Pharmaceuticals, throughout Nigeria. The WHO prequalification mark signals that the product has passed rigorous international quality and safety testing.

Billy Shoaga, Business Lead for VIYA Health Nigeria, explained that increasing access to quality family planning products addresses a critical healthcare gap. Many women in Nigeria face unmet family planning needs due to limited availability or high costs of contraceptives.
