Ghana Launches Region17Gh to Unite Global Diaspora

Ghanaians scattered across the world now have a dedicated platform to channel their skills, money, and connections back home.

Region17Gh officially launched Thursday in Washington, D.C., creating the first structured nonprofit specifically designed to mobilize the Ghanaian diaspora for national development. The organization earned federal tax-exempt status in the United States and operates under the theme "Harnessing the Power of the Diaspora to Transform Ghana's Future."

Ghana's Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, delivered the keynote address and became the organization's lifetime patron. He emphasized that Ghana's greatest export has never been cocoa, gold, or oil, but its people.

"Every successful national transformation has been powered by partnership," Ambassador Smith told the crowd of business leaders, entrepreneurs, U.S. senators, and policymakers. He described the initiative as an invitation to dream together, build together, and rise together.

The idea grew from President John Dramani Mahama's vision of treating the Ghanaian diaspora as the country's "17th Region" during the Diaspora Summit in Accra. Executive Director Maabena Ohene-Kena Webb said the organization is built on trust, transparency, collaboration, and measurable impact, moving beyond conversations to actual results.

Presidential Advisor on the Economy Seth Terkper and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture John Dumelo attended the launch alongside U.S. Senator Michael B. Mitchell. Their presence signals serious government commitment to making diaspora engagement a central development strategy.

The power of this initiative extends far beyond individual donations or one-off projects. By organizing the intellectual, professional, entrepreneurial, and financial resources of Ghanaians abroad, Region17Gh creates systematic pathways for knowledge exchange, investment opportunities, and sustainable partnerships.
