Ghana Pharmacists' Credit Union Slashes Loan Rate to 15%
Pharmacists in Ghana just got a major financial boost as their credit union cut loan rates from 25% to 15%. The move will make it easier for nearly 5,000 members to afford business loans and personal credit.
Nearly 5,000 pharmacists in Ghana can now access loans at rates they couldn't dream of just months ago, thanks to a bold decision by their member-owned credit union.
The Ghana Co-operative Pharmacists Credit Union announced at its annual meeting last Friday that it slashed interest rates from nearly 25% to 15%. Board Chairman Dr. Paul Owusu Donkor called it one of the union's biggest wins of the year, designed to strengthen members' financial health and expand access to affordable credit.
The timing couldn't be better for pharmacists trying to start or grow their businesses. The credit union recently launched the SEEDS Project, which helped four young pharmacists open their own pharmacies after years of planning and saving.
Dr. Patience Tsegah, CEO of Unicom Chemists, explained what makes this credit union special. When members deposit money, they're not just saving for themselves but building a pool of resources that gets reinvested back into the pharmacy profession.

The Ripple Effect
The lower loan rate does more than just save members money on interest payments. It creates a foundation for pharmacists to take entrepreneurial risks they might have avoided when borrowing cost nearly 25%.
The credit union also rolled out digital tools to make banking even easier. Members can now use a mobile app on both Android and iOS devices to make deposits, check balances, and handle transactions from anywhere.
The organization is now focused on strengthening its foundation for the long term. About 1,367 members haven't reached the minimum shareholding of 500 Ghanaian cedis needed to qualify for dividend payments, and leaders are encouraging everyone to increase their stake in the union.
Dr. Owusu Nyarko from the Credit Union Association of Ghana praised the organization's strong liquidity and support for members' educational and retirement needs. He noted that if members keep up with loan repayments, the union can continue growing and delivering even greater benefits.
With nearly 5,000 pharmacists now accessing more affordable credit, Ghana's healthcare entrepreneurs have a powerful new tool to build the businesses their communities need.
