Ghana President Donates Hearse to Support Community Funerals

When families face the loss of a loved one, the last thing they should worry about is how to give them a dignified farewell.

President John Dramani Mahama recognized this challenge for Ghana's Gonja community and donated a hearse to the Greater Accra Gonjaland Youth Association this week. The vehicle was commissioned Sunday at a ceremony in Accra attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and community members.

Association Chairman Issahaku John Polly Manful-Wura thanked President Mahama for responding to their request, calling the donation an expression of unity and compassion. The hearse will help Gonja families arrange proper funeral services without the financial strain of securing transportation.

The gesture inspired others to step up. Members of Parliament from Gonjaland presented the association with 10,000 Ghanaian cedis and two motorbikes to support its work. Deputy Minister Alhaji Yusif Sulemana announced that young people from the community had already secured jobs through recent employment initiatives, with more placements being processed.

The Ripple Effect

The hearse donation solved an immediate problem, but the community is thinking bigger. GAGYA announced plans to acquire 10 motorbikes for young people and provide financial support for women by the end of 2026.

The association intends to partner with Ghana's Microfinance and Small Loans Centre, Ghana EXIM Bank, and the Youth Employment Agency. These collaborations will provide soft loans and Aboboyaa tricycles to help community members build small businesses and gain economic independence.

Manful-Wura urged community members to stay united and prioritize collective interests over political differences. He emphasized that improving livelihoods for young people and women remains central to the association's mission moving forward.

What started as one community asking for help with funeral services has grown into a movement for economic empowerment and unity.
