Ghana Presidential Hopeful Pledges Living Wages for All

Imagine earning enough not just to survive, but to thrive. That's the vision one Ghanaian leader is fighting to make reality for millions of workers.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, running to become the New Patriotic Party's presidential candidate, announced plans this week to guarantee livable wages for all Ghanaian workers. Speaking in Kumasi ahead of the party's January 31 primary, he laid out a clear definition of what fair pay should look like.

"Livable wages are wages that take care of you and your family," Dr. Adutwum explained. "They should allow you to pay school fees, meet household needs, and, in time, own a car and a home."

The former Education Minister sees this as more than a moral issue. He argues that better pay drives economic growth by increasing worker productivity and consumer spending power.

But wages alone won't solve the problem. Dr. Adutwum is coupling his pay proposals with expanded skills training programs, especially in information technology and other high-demand fields. The goal is to help workers add more value at their jobs and earn higher incomes as a result.

"There can be no increase in productivity without giving people the opportunity to train themselves well and acquire relevant skills," he emphasized. His administration would focus on equipping workers with 21st-century skills to compete in a modern economy.

The Ripple Effect

The stakes are high for Ghana. Dr. Adutwum noted that close to 40 percent of Ghanaians are either unemployed or working but still living in poverty. Breaking that cycle could transform not just individual families, but entire communities.

When workers earn enough to support their families comfortably, children stay in school longer. When parents can afford homes, neighborhoods stabilize. When employees develop new skills, businesses grow and create more jobs. The positive effects multiply outward.

Dr. Adutwum's focus on both immediate relief through better wages and long-term solutions through education represents a comprehensive approach to poverty reduction. Rather than choosing between helping people today or preparing them for tomorrow, he's proposing to do both.
