Ghana Starts 400-Bed Mother and Child Hospital Block

Land preparation has begun at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana for a transformative healthcare facility that will change the landscape of maternal and child care in West Africa.

The 400-bed Mother and Child Block will replace the hospital's current maternity unit with a comprehensive modern facility. Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced the project as part of renewed national investment in major health infrastructure.

The new facility will house specialized obstetrics and gynecology wards alongside multiple labor and delivery suites. Dedicated operating theaters will serve mothers and newborns, while a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will provide critical care for the tiniest patients.

One groundbreaking addition stands out: an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre. This will expand access to fertility treatments for Ghanaian families who previously had limited options for reproductive healthcare.

The facility will also include High Dependency and Intensive Care Units for complex cases. Antenatal and postnatal clinics will support mothers throughout their pregnancy journeys, while breastfeeding and family planning units will provide ongoing care.

An Emergency Obstetric Care Unit will handle urgent cases, backed by comprehensive diagnostic imaging and laboratory services. Blood bank facilities and pharmacy services will be on-site, ensuring families have everything they need under one roof.

Beyond patient care, the facility will include physiotherapy and rehabilitation units to support recovery. Teaching, research, and conference facilities will train the next generation of maternal health professionals.
