Ghana Writing Clinic Expands to Kumasi After Huge Interest

When hundreds of aspiring writers traveled from central Ghana to attend free writing workshops in 2025, organizers knew they had to bring the program closer to home.

The Manasseh & Friends Creative Writing Clinic is adding Kumasi as its third location for 2026, joining Accra and Tamale. The expansion means writers in Ghana's middle belt no longer need to make the long journey to participate.

Investigative journalist and author Manasseh Azure Awuni launched the clinic to inspire a new generation of storytellers. The program offers hands-on training in writing techniques through interactive exercises and connects participants with established writers.

Everything is free for accepted applicants. That includes the workshop itself, meals and snacks, books, and souvenirs. Star Oil Ghana and MTN Ghana are sponsoring the 2026 edition, making the zero-cost model possible.

"We believe that reading is integral to writing, so our sponsors have been generous enough to sponsor free books for all participants," said Awuni, who recently completed a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Kumasi session happens September 5, 2026. Accra hosts the southern region on August 29, and Tamale serves the northern region on September 12.

The Ripple Effect

The overwhelming response to the maiden edition shows Ghana's hunger for creative writing education. Since announcing the 2026 dates, organizers have received requests from writers across the country asking when the clinic would reach their regions.

Facilitators include communication strategist Maukeni Ribeiro and journalist Abdul Hayi Moomen, head of communications at the University for Development Studies. Additional writers may join the teaching team this year.

Participants who complete the program gain access to publishing platforms through media partners Joy 99.7 FM and myjoyonline.com. This gives new writers real opportunities to share their work with readers.

To apply, aspiring writers submit a 500-word writing sample or two poems along with an application form. The selection process ensures committed participants who will benefit most from the training.

The expansion from two cities to three represents more than logistics. It reflects a commitment to making quality writing education accessible regardless of where people live in Ghana.
