Ghana's Volta Region Gets New Stadium and Sports Hub

Young athletes in Ghana's Volta Region just got a major boost as the government pledged to build world-class sports facilities designed to find and nurture the next generation of sporting stars.

Regional Minister James Gunu announced plans for a FIFA Category Two standard stadium and a multipurpose sports facility at a breakfast meeting with the Sports Writers Association of Ghana in Ho on April 9. The facilities will serve schools and grassroots programs across the region.

The announcement came during SWAG's eighth anniversary celebration, where Gunu emphasized how sports build community strength and give young people pathways to success. "Sports play a vital role in shaping our national narrative, inspiring young people and promoting unity across communities," he told the gathering of journalists, presenters, lecturers and students.

Beyond the infrastructure, Gunu outlined plans for a dedicated secretariat focused entirely on identifying talented young athletes and helping them develop their skills. The government is also launching the Minister's Cup, a competition designed to discover promising players at the community level.

The minister praised sports journalists for their role in making athletes visible and inspiring kids to get involved in sports. He made a cash donation to support SWAG's programs, and the organization named him Chief Patron in recognition of his commitment to athletic development.
