Giant Lobsters Take Over Ancient Pompeii in Art First

Imagine exploring a 2,000-year-old Roman city and finding yourself face-to-face with a giant steel lobster. That's exactly what's happening in Pompeii this summer, and visitors can't get enough.

British pop artist Philip Colbert just unveiled his most ambitious project yet: more than 30 monumental lobster sculptures scattered throughout one of the world's most famous archaeological sites. The installation marks a historic moment for Pompeii, which hasn't hosted a contemporary sculpture exhibition in 30 years and has never before allowed an artist to display work inside the ancient houses.

Colbert, often called the heir to Andy Warhol, chose Pompeii for deeply personal reasons. He found inspiration in a small lobster mosaic inside the House of the Faun, one of the site's grandest Roman villas.

The sculptures range from shiny stainless steel lobsters perched between ancient columns to massive black steel figures that look like futuristic warrior robots. Some hide in unexpected corners of Roman homes, while others tower over temple ruins and ancient streets.

Why This Inspires

Colbert's lobsters do something remarkable: they make ancient history feel alive and relevant today. By placing contemporary art in a city frozen by volcanic ash in 79 AD, the exhibition invites visitors to think about how societies remember their past while imagining their future.

The project goes beyond just Pompeii itself. The exhibition extends across six additional archaeological sites in the Campania region, creating an art trail that connects local communities with contemporary culture. School groups and local associations throughout the area will participate in special programs designed to make art accessible to everyone.

For Colbert, Pompeii represents more than just ruins. "Pompeii is, for me, the ultimate city of antiquity, a place that exists beyond time," he explains. His playful intervention transforms the archaeological park from a solemn monument into a living cultural landscape where ancient mythology meets pop culture.

The exhibition runs through early 2027, giving plenty of time for visitors from around the world to experience this unlikely pairing of Roman history and giant crustaceans. Even one of history's best-preserved ancient cities can become a canvas for fresh artistic conversations that bridge millennia.
