Giants Broadcaster Duane Kuiper Battles Cancer, Won't Miss Sendoff

After 76 years of bringing warmth and joy to Giants fans, broadcaster Duane Kuiper shared Sunday that he's facing throat cancer, but nothing will keep him from celebrating his best friend one last time.

Kuiper, who previously beat cancer in 2021, began treatment at Stanford Medicine last week. Despite having to miss this weekend's games in Los Angeles, he's determined to return to the booth Tuesday for the final homestand of the season.

The timing carries extra weight. His broadcast partner of decades, Mike Krukow, will retire after the season ends, closing the book on one of baseball's most beloved announcing duos.

"I'm optimistic that it will be successfully treated," Kuiper said in his announcement. "I'm looking forward to returning Tuesday and this weekend to celebrate my partner, Mike Krukow, and his remarkable career."

In an industry where partnerships come and go, "Kruk and Kuip" became family to Giants fans. Their friendship transcended the booth, carrying through Krukow's battle with inclusion body myositis, a degenerative muscle disease, and now Kuiper's second cancer diagnosis.

Fellow announcer Jon Miller witnessed their dedication firsthand. He's never once heard either broadcaster wish for an easy night, despite their health struggles.

"When we're at the ballpark, there's no place we'd rather be," Miller said. "He's a pro. He's ready to be there."

The Giants organization and fans have rallied around both men. Kuiper expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from his family, broadcast partners, and the team.

While Krukow prepares for his final game on September 27, Kuiper has made clear he's not done yet. He plans to continue calling Giants games beyond this season, bringing the same enthusiasm that's defined his career.
