Global Renewable Energy Soars by Record 693 Gigawatts in 2025

The world just proved that clean energy isn't just good for the planet. It's becoming an economic powerhouse that's impossible to ignore.

Global renewable power capacity surged by a record 693 gigawatts in 2025, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency. To put that in perspective, that's more than half the entire installed power capacity of the United States added in just one year.

The numbers tell an even more exciting story when you look at the savings. Thanks to this renewable energy boom, humanity avoided spending almost $500 billion on fossil fuels. That's more money than the entire annual economic output of three quarters of all countries on Earth.

"The brute power of market forces is taking hold," said Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. "The shift to clean energy is now irreversible."

The reason for this confidence? Renewables have become the most cost-competitive source of new electricity in most markets around the world. Companies and countries aren't just choosing clean energy because it's better for the environment. They're choosing it because it makes financial sense.

The growth puts the world tantalizingly close to a critical climate goal. Countries agreed in 2023 to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. If this year's growth rate continues, the world will reach 10.6 terawatts by 2030, just 0.6 terawatts short of the 11.2 terawatt target.

The Bright Side

Even with this remarkable progress, there's room for optimism about closing the gap. The shortfall has already narrowed from 0.9 terawatts in last year's assessment to 0.6 terawatts today.

Experts point to several proven strategies that could accelerate growth even further. Upgrading electric grids and combining solar panels with wind turbines and battery storage can deliver cost-competitive power around the clock, not just when the sun shines or wind blows.

The challenge now isn't whether renewables can compete. It's whether they can grow fast enough to actually replace fossil fuels as global energy demand increases from air conditioning in a warming world and power-hungry data centers serving artificial intelligence.

Markets have already made their choice, and that choice is pointing toward a cleaner future.
