Global South Nations Unite to Build Solar Supply Chains

A groundbreaking partnership is taking shape between India, African nations, and other Global South countries to build solar panel supply chains that work for everyone, not just wealthy nations.

At the International Energy Conference in New Delhi this August, leaders from India, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria gathered with a shared mission. They're creating manufacturing networks that help emerging economies produce their own solar technology instead of depending entirely on imports.

India is leading by example with an impressive milestone. The country now has the capacity to manufacture over 215 gigawatts of solar modules, a dramatic expansion that positions it as a major player in clean energy production.

Abhinav Mahajan, who chairs India's National Solar Energy Federation manufacturing committee, explained why this matters beyond just making panels. "Building partnerships across the Global South could open a new chapter for the country's solar manufacturing ambitions," he told the conference.

The partnership goes deeper than just factories. Countries are sharing technology knowledge, training workers, and helping each other access the raw materials needed for solar panels. Kenya's energy company KenGen and Nigeria's Auxano Solar are already exploring how to build local capabilities.

The Ripple Effect

This collaboration creates a domino effect of positive outcomes across continents. When countries can manufacture their own solar equipment, they create skilled jobs at home and keep more money in their local economies instead of sending it overseas.

The timing couldn't be better. Global supply chain disruptions over recent years showed how risky it is to depend on single sources for critical technology. By diversifying where solar equipment comes from, these nations are building resilience while accelerating their shift to clean energy.

South Africa's renewable energy director and Tanzania's energy minister both emphasized that this isn't just about adding solar capacity. It's about building entire ecosystems that can withstand global disruptions and serve their own people first.

Representatives from more than 15 countries attended the two-day Global South Convening, mapping out everything from mineral exploration to final installation. The collaborative spirit in the room signaled a shift from competition to cooperation.

For communities across these nations, the promise is tangible: cleaner air, reliable electricity, and manufacturing jobs that didn't exist before.
