Golfer Walks Again After 3-Story Lift Shaft Fall

A professional golfer is calling his recovery a miracle after surviving a three-story fall down a lift shaft that could have ended his life.

Andrea Pavan, 36, was preparing for the South African Open last week when he stepped into a lift at his accommodation. The doors opened, but the lift car hadn't arrived yet, sending the Italian golfer plummeting two to three floors down the empty shaft.

The DP Tour star sustained multiple injuries and needed immediate surgery on his shoulder and back. Just days later, he shared news that stunned everyone: he can walk again.

"It truly feels like a miracle to be able to walk and start to do some basic activities, although at a very slow and careful pace," Pavan wrote on social media after being discharged from the hospital. He's now continuing his rehabilitation at nearby accommodation arranged by supporters.

Why This Inspires

Pavan's gratitude shines through every word of his recovery update. He thanked the medical staff, surgeons, and nurses who made his "incredible recovery a possibility," along with fellow golfers and caddies who visited him in intensive care during the tournament.

"It truly felt like a big family," he shared. The professional golf community has rallied around him, with former teammate Matt van Zandt launching a fundraiser that has raised over $81,000 in six days to help cover expenses.

Pavan knows the road ahead won't be easy. He'll need to stay in South Africa for five more weeks to rehabilitate both his shoulder and back, plus heal other injuries from the fall. After that, rehabilitation continues when he returns home to the United States.

But his spirit remains unshaken. "God has answered many prayers," Pavan wrote, his heart "overwhelmed with love and joy" from the outpouring of support.

Sometimes the smallest victories mean everything.
