Good Samaritan Saves Driver After Train Crash in Fort Lauderdale

Victor Carvalho never expected his first aid training would be put to use just days after completing the course, but when he witnessed a devastating train collision early Monday morning, he became a lifeline for a stranger in desperate need.

The dramatic scene unfolded just before midnight Sunday at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Flagler Drive in Fort Lauderdale. A woman attempted to drive around lowered crossing arms to beat an oncoming Brightline train. The impact sent sparks flying as her vehicle was dragged several hundred feet down the railway before the train finally stopped.

Carvalho didn't hesitate. He jumped a fence, called 911, and reached the mangled vehicle just as the woman managed to push her door open. He carefully helped her to the ground and kept her upright and conscious while waiting for emergency responders.

The woman had suffered a broken arm and facial injuries, screaming in pain and panic. Carvalho stayed calm, using the skills he'd learned just days earlier to comfort her and keep her stable until paramedics arrived.

The Bright Side

Surveillance footage showed the shocking reality: nearly every part of the car was completely destroyed except the driver's seat area where the woman sat. Witness Marina Sarymsakovn put it perfectly when she said people don't often get that lucky.

First responders transported the woman to Broward Health Medical Center. Her husband later shared that she was in good spirits and scheduled for surgery on her fractured arm Monday. Despite the traumatic crash and serious injuries, doctors expect her to recover.

For Carvalho, the timing of his training felt almost meant to be. He expressed gratitude that the woman survived and could tell her own story.

The crash serves as a sobering reminder about railway crossing safety, but it's also a powerful example of how preparedness and quick action can make the difference between tragedy and survival.
