Google Breaks Ground on $15B AI Hub in India

Google turned dirt on its biggest international AI project this week, launching a $15 billion technology hub that signals India's arrival as a global innovation powerhouse.

The tech giant broke ground Tuesday in Visakhapatnam, a southeastern port city locals call Vizag, on what will become its largest AI center anywhere outside American soil. Construction marks the first major milestone in a five-year plan announced last October to build a complete AI ecosystem in India.

"This project represents a $15 billion blueprint to deliver a full stack AI ecosystem," said Bikash Koley, Google's vice president for global infrastructure, at the groundbreaking ceremony. The sprawling campus will include a gigawatt-scale data center designed to power Google's AI services like Gemini and Google Search for users worldwide.

The facility puts Visakhapatnam on the map as a major tech destination. The coastal city is also being developed as a landing point for submarine internet cables connecting India to Singapore, strengthening the region's digital infrastructure.

Local officials are celebrating the investment as transformative for their community. Nara Lokesh, information technology minister for Andhra Pradesh state, called the launch part of "the journey to build India's most coveted AI and deep-tech hub."
