Google Engineer Quits Dublin Job for Organic Farm in Punjab

Mantaj Sidhu had everything most people dream of: a high-paying job at Google in Dublin, financial security, and professional prestige. But every time he thought about the adulterated food on his parents' table back in Punjab, the success felt hollow.

The statistics haunted him. In 2021, nearly one in five food samples in India failed basic safety standards set by the country's food authority. For Mantaj, what his family ate became a question he couldn't ignore from thousands of miles away.

So in 2022, he did something his friends and family thought was crazy. He quit Google, returned to Punjab, and started Gill Organics with his cousin Baljit Singh Gill on farmland in Patiala.

Their solution is brilliantly simple. Urban families pay for a six-month subscription and get their own small plot where up to 18 seasonal vegetables grow organically on their behalf. They can visit anytime, pick their own produce, or have fresh harvests delivered straight to their doorstep.

The farm uses cow dung and vermicompost instead of chemicals. Pests get treated with traditional methods like khatti lassi, a sour buttermilk spray. Mulching techniques keep the soil healthy and productive without synthetic fertilizers.

Every vegetable comes with something supermarkets can't offer: complete transparency. Families know exactly where their food grows, how it's treated, and who tends it.

Today, around 35 families regularly receive produce from Gill Organics, with many more waiting for space to open up. Mantaj earns far less than he did at Google, but he's redefined what success means.

His parents now eat vegetables he knows are safe. That peace of mind, he says, is worth more than any paycheck from a tech giant. And every family that joins the subscription is one more household eating food they can actually trust.
