Google Photos Restores Classic Search After User Backlash

Sometimes listening to your users means admitting when a "upgrade" isn't actually better.

Google Photos is backing down from its push to replace traditional search with AI-powered "Ask Photos" after widespread complaints. The company will soon add a prominent toggle that lets users instantly switch back to the classic search experience that made Photos revolutionary in the first place.

The Ask Photos feature, powered by Google's Gemini AI, was supposed to understand natural language queries better. Instead, users found it painfully slow and prone to choosing the wrong pictures.

Google Photos head Shimrit Ben-Yair acknowledged the company heard the complaints loud and clear. The beta rollout that began in 2024 generated so much negative feedback that Google had to pause the full launch in summer 2025.

Before this change, turning off Ask Photos required navigating three levels deep into settings. Most users probably didn't even know the option existed.

Now the AI toggle will appear right at the top of the search tab. Flip it off, and you get what Ben-Yair calls "fast classic search" back instantly.

The Bright Side

This story shows something rare in tech: a major company changing course based on what users actually want rather than what executives think they should want.

Google Photos' original search was genuinely revolutionary. It let people find photos by searching for what was in them rather than scrolling through endless timelines. That technology used artificial intelligence too, just not the generative kind currently dominating tech conversations.

The company hasn't given up on Ask Photos entirely. The team continues refining the model, and Ben-Yair says recent improvements to popular searches have led to better user feedback.

But having both options side by side means users can directly compare them. If classic search consistently works better, people will notice.

This decision respects users' time and preferences while still leaving room for AI features to improve and potentially win people over later.

Sometimes the best innovation is admitting what already works and giving people the choice to keep it.
