Google Signs 1 GW Texas Solar Deal to Power Data Centers

Google and TotalEnergies just signed one of the largest renewable energy deals in U.S. history, bringing 1 gigawatt of new solar power to Texas grids.

The agreement will deliver about 28 terawatt-hours of electricity over 15 years from two solar farms currently in development. The 805-megawatt Wichita solar farm and 195-megawatt Mustang Creek site are scheduled to break ground in spring 2026.

This marks the biggest renewable power purchase agreement TotalEnergies has ever signed in the United States. It also reflects a major shift in how tech companies are meeting their growing energy needs as artificial intelligence and cloud computing expand.

Rather than simply buying renewable energy credits, Google is now contracting directly for brand-new generation capacity. Will Conkling, Google's director of clean energy and power, says bringing new generation online is critical for expanding operations while increasing reliable and affordable electricity supply across the region.

The timing matters because data center power demand is surging right now, especially in Texas. These projects add to 1.2 gigawatts of separate agreements recently secured by Clearway, a developer half-owned by TotalEnergies, to supply Google facilities across three major power markets.

Marc-Antoine Pignon, TotalEnergies' vice president of U.S. renewables, notes that major tech companies are increasingly seeking customized clean power supply as they scale up energy-intensive digital infrastructure. Colocated projects can help address land and power availability constraints tied to large data centers.

The Ripple Effect

While these solar farms won't deliver power until after 2026, they represent a meaningful step toward cleaner grid expansion. TotalEnergies now holds about 10 gigawatts of renewable and storage capacity in its U.S. portfolio, with 5 gigawatts in Texas alone.

The deal shows how private sector demand can drive clean energy buildout at scale. When hyperscale tech companies commit to purchasing new renewable generation, they create market certainty that helps developers secure financing and move projects forward faster.

These agreements also strengthen the overall power grid by adding capacity that benefits everyone, not just Google. As new solar farms come online, they'll provide clean electricity to Texas markets that have struggled to keep pace with explosive growth.
