Google's Top 4 AI Scientists Launch Discovery Loop Startup

That's the vision behind Discovery Loop, a startup launched today by four of Google's most celebrated AI minds. Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist who helped build the company's core infrastructure, is leaving after 27 years. He's joined by his longtime partner Sanjay Ghemawat and two other AI superstars: Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le.

Their plan starts bold and gets bolder. Discovery Loop will first improve its own AI algorithms by having them experiment on themselves. Then they'll tackle chip design, drug discovery, biology, and material science.

"Humans have been using AI to do research, not using AI to be a researcher," says venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, who invested in the company. "The fundamental thing here is that AI is the researcher."

The team believes a few people using their system could out-invent the world's largest research organizations. They're already working on teaching their AI to generate genuinely new ideas, something current models struggle with.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai tried hard to keep them, holding multiple meetings to convince the team to stay. The company ultimately gave its blessing and even took a stake in Discovery Loop. But the scientists wanted the freedom and speed of a startup.

Their pitch to investors was remarkably simple: a few slides showing their backgrounds and a rough sketch of their approach. Venture capitalists lined up anyway.

"With this team, I wouldn't need to know what they were doing before I backed them," Khosla says. "It's the ultimate superstar team."
