Governor Reopens 65-Year-Old Road After Personal Visit

Governor Dapo Abiodun made a promise that thousands of Nigerian drivers have been waiting decades to hear after traveling on the Olorunda-Imeko Road himself this week.

The governor of Ogun State commissioned the newly renovated Imeko-Afon Township Road on Wednesday, a route originally built in 1959. But when he drove on the connecting Olorunda-Imeko Road earlier that day, he saw the deplorable conditions for himself and immediately ordered its reconstruction.

"I told the commissioner that the project must go to the next Executive Council meeting and that construction should begin immediately," Abiodun said at the ceremony in Imeko-Afon. He directed his Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to prepare cost estimates and advertise for qualified contractors on the spot.

The newly opened Imeko-Afon Township Road will enhance trade between Imeko-Afon and Abeokuta North while addressing chronic flooding that has plagued the community for years. Local leaders praised the project as a major win for agriculture and commerce in the region.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't an isolated project. Governor Abiodun's administration has constructed more than 1,600 kilometers of roads across Ogun State over the past six and a half years, including the 100-kilometer Sagamu Interchange-Papalanto-Obelle Road built with reinforced concrete.

The road improvements will directly benefit farmers who struggle to transport agricultural produce to markets. When the federal Badagry-Sokoto Highway project that passes through Imeko-Afon is completed, the transportation of goods will become even easier.

Local Chairman Theophilus Oloyede said the project demonstrates the government's commitment to economic development through infrastructure. The Obaladi of Afon, Oba Babatunde Rasheed, commended the governor for tackling a road that previous administrations had abandoned.

The rebuilt township road connects communities that have waited generations for reliable infrastructure, opening new opportunities for prosperity that reach far beyond smoother commutes.
