Great-Grandfather Becomes Lawyer at 77 in Queensland

🦸 Hero Alert

Russell Galt just became Queensland's second-oldest newly admitted lawyer at age 77, proving retirement doesn't mean the end of ambition. The Toowoomba great-grandfather conquered a grueling law degree to keep his mind sharp and inspire his family.

While most 77-year-olds are settling into retirement, Russell Galt just got sworn in as one of Queensland's newest lawyers.

The Toowoomba great-grandfather completed his Juris Doctor degree at age 77, becoming the state's second-oldest newly admitted lawyer in March. His journey started with a conversation from decades ago that never left his mind.

"When I ran into my primary school principal in my late teens, he asked if I was studying medicine," Galt recalled. "I felt as if I had failed him."

That feeling of unfinished business followed Galt through a teaching career, then a pivot to financial services, and two master's degrees in his 50s. But retirement in 2016 didn't slow him down.

His father's vascular dementia diagnosis at 87 sparked a new motivation. Watching a brilliant man lose his mental faculties convinced Galt and his brothers they needed to keep their minds active as they aged.

At 73, Galt enrolled in law school at the University of Southern Queensland. The three-and-a-half-year journey wasn't easy. He tackled 24 subjects, underwent bypass surgery during the pandemic, and pushed through doubts about whether he'd ever finish.

"It was daunting," he admitted. "That knocked about six months off my plans, but I came back fighting fit."

Why This Inspires

Galt's achievement is sparking change beyond his own life. His daughter Stephanie pursued another degree after watching her father graduate, calling him inspirational for his dedication and persistence.

The ripples extend even further. One in four Australian men over 70 now remain in the workforce, quadruple the rate from 20 years ago. Queensland Law Society president Peter Jolly says employers increasingly value the judgment and experience that comes with age.

"It's a fantastic achievement personally, but it's also a great example of the opportunities the legal profession offers to anyone, irrespective of their age," Jolly said.

Galt is now job hunting, eager to help clients solve problems in ways younger lawyers might not be ready for yet. His advice to other retirees considering a return to the classroom? Just put your toe in the water and try.

"When I look back on it, it's just a blink of an eye," he said.
