Green Electricity Hits Record 9.8% Growth Worldwide
The world just made its fastest shift to renewable energy in history, with clean electricity production jumping nearly 10% in a single year. Fossil fuel use is now being left in the dust as solar and wind power surge across every continent.
The planet just crossed a major milestone in the race against climate change, and the numbers tell a story of unstoppable momentum.
Global renewable electricity production soared by 9.8% in 2024, according to new data from the International Renewable Energy Agency. Meanwhile, fossil fuel generation crawled forward at just 1.4%, signaling a dramatic shift in how the world powers itself.
Clean energy now accounts for nearly one-third of all electricity produced globally. That's 31.7% of the world's power coming from sources that don't pump carbon into the atmosphere.
The growth wasn't limited to wealthy nations. Asia led the charge with renewable electricity jumping 14.3% to reach 4,589 terawatt-hours, powered largely by massive solar and wind installations. The Middle East recorded the fastest regional growth at 17.3%, proving that even oil-rich regions are betting big on clean power.
Europe added 7.2% more renewable generation, while North and South America grew by 5.8% and 2.9% respectively. In 2025, the world installed a record 693 gigawatts of new renewable capacity, enough to power hundreds of millions of homes.

"The world is rallying behind electrification as a cornerstone of the energy transition," said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. The agency projects that hitting climate goals will require renewable electricity to expand 2.5 times by 2035.
Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN climate body, called the transition "irreversible" and pointed to simple economics. Clean energy is now cheaper, safer, and faster to bring online than fossil fuels in most markets.
The Ripple Effect
This surge isn't just about numbers on a spreadsheet. Cleaner electricity means healthier air in cities, more stable energy prices, and countries gaining independence from volatile fuel imports. As renewable capacity reaches nearly half of all global power generation capacity at 49.5%, entire industries are redesigning themselves around abundant clean energy.
The shift is creating millions of jobs in solar panel manufacturing, wind turbine installation, and grid modernization. Communities that were once dependent on coal mines are becoming hubs for renewable technology.
The momentum shows no signs of slowing, and for the first time, the finish line doesn't look impossibly far away.
