Greenwich College Earns Top Sustainability Award for New Campus

A new college campus in Greenwich is showing the world what the future of sustainable education looks like.

London South East Colleges celebrated the opening of its new Greenwich Campus this summer after earning a BREEAM 'Outstanding' rating, the highest possible mark for environmental performance. The achievement makes it a trailblazer in the further education sector, where such ratings remain rare.

The five-story building cost £45m and took years of partnership between the college, the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the Greater London Authority, the Department for Education, and construction firm Kier. Every design choice prioritized sustainability without sacrificing student needs.

The campus runs on roof-mounted air source heat pumps paired with an ultra-efficient heating and cooling system. Extensive solar panels cover the roof alongside green roofing that absorbs rainwater and reduces urban heat. Together, these features dramatically cut carbon emissions while keeping energy costs low.

Inside, students now enjoy modern classrooms, flexible teaching spaces, and dedicated wellbeing areas designed for mental health support. Specialist rooms include a collaborative Mac studio for creative projects, a professional training kitchen, and a learning resource center for independent study.

The construction team worked carefully around the existing campus, which stayed open throughout the project despite sitting near one of east London's busiest roads. They demolished outdated facilities to make room for the 5,654 square meter building without disrupting student learning.

The Ripple Effect

The project created 33 jobs and reached 3,000 people through educational outreach programs. The construction team donated £50,000 to local community organizations and charities, spreading benefits beyond the campus walls.

Dr. Sam Parrett, the college's CEO, reflected on the decade-long journey to secure the campus's future. "We committed to recognizing the importance of this college as a training and skills provider for our local communities," she said.

The new facility will train students for careers in the digital and green industries transforming Greenwich's economy. By combining sustainability with practical skills training, the campus prepares young people for the jobs that will shape tomorrow while protecting the environment today.
