Groom Helicopters From Wedding to Captain Cricket Final at Lord's

Peter Melhuish faced an impossible choice: marry the love of his life or captain his childhood cricket team at England's most legendary stadium. Thanks to his community, he gets both.

The 32-year-old has played for Blackheath Cricket Club in Guildford since he was six years old. When his team reached the final of the Cawston Press Village Cup at Lord's Cricket Ground, he discovered the match fell just 12 hours after his wedding to Izzy Upton in North Wales.

The couple had been planning their September 5th wedding for over a year, long before the cricket fixtures were announced. Missing either event felt heartbreaking.

His club came up with a creative solution: fly him by helicopter from the wedding venue to the stadium in northwest London. The flight takes just 90 minutes, compared to a grueling 5am taxi ride that would barely get him there by the 10:30am match start.

Blackheath Cricket Club launched a fundraiser with a £4,500 goal. The response overwhelmed everyone involved.

Donations poured in from cricket lovers across the country, including a £1,000 contribution from broadcaster Piers Morgan. The total surpassed £6,000, easily covering the helicopter cost.

"Very few people are lucky enough ever to achieve both of those dreams, but vanishingly few are unlucky enough to have them both happen within 24 hours of each other," the club said in their fundraising statement.

Melhuish told the BBC that his fiancée had been incredibly supportive throughout the dilemma. She understood how much playing at Lord's meant not just to him, but to his entire club.

Why This Inspires

This story shows what communities can do when they rally behind someone's dreams. Rather than forcing an awful choice, Melhuish's teammates and supporters found a way to honor both major life moments.

The surplus funds will go to Kids for Kids, a charity supporting children in Darfur and Ethiopia since 2011. The cause was close to Melhuish's late mother, turning his celebration into a tribute to her memory.

On September 6th, Melhuish will wake up as a newlywed, board a helicopter, and captain his boyhood team at cricket's most iconic venue—living proof that sometimes you really can have it all.
