Ontario Camp Gets Kitchen Makeover Thanks to Community

Students heading to camp this year will find something special waiting for them in the kitchen.

The Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre is transforming its heavily used kitchen with a complete renovation. The project brings new stainless steel countertops, more storage space, and upgraded appliances to the facility that serves students, campers, and community groups throughout the year.

The Bluewater Education Foundation made the renovation possible through its 2026 capital campaign. Community donors rallied to support the center, recognizing how important the facility is for connecting young people with nature.

"The kitchen is one of the most heavily used spaces at the Centre, and this renovation will make a tremendous difference in how we are able to serve the people who come here to learn, explore, and build connections with nature," said Meagan Hayward, Coordinator of Strategic Initiatives.

The upgrade addresses a real need. Commercial kitchens at outdoor education centers work overtime, preparing meals for large groups of students during school programs and campers during summer sessions.

The Ripple Effect

This kitchen renovation represents something bigger than new appliances. When outdoor education centers thrive, they create lasting memories and build environmental stewardship in young people who might not otherwise experience nature.

The foundation continues building momentum with two September fundraising events. On September 19, the Music Among Nature Concert will bring live performances to the center grounds, combining community connection with the natural beauty that makes the location special.

That same evening, the foundation will draw its bike raffle winner. One supporter will take home a bicycle worth approximately $600 while knowing their ticket purchase supported the center's mission.

These fundraising efforts show how communities can protect spaces that matter for future generations.
