Guanajuato Airport Gets $167M Upgrade Over Four Years

One of Mexico's fastest-growing airports is about to get a whole lot better for travelers passing through the heart of the country.

Guanajuato International Airport, which serves over 3 million passengers each year, just secured $167 million for a four-year modernization project. Governor Libia Dennise García announced the investment on Wednesday, calling it "the most important modernization phase of the last two decades."

The transformation will reshape how travelers move through the airport. The terminal building will grow by 23%, creating more breathing room for security checks, immigration lines, and boarding areas.

Baggage claim is getting even more attention, with a 49% expansion and two new carousels to help travelers get their luggage faster. The last waiting room near boarding gates will more than double in size, growing by 150%.

The airport is also adding smart technology to speed things up. Five new autonomous immigration checkpoints will let passengers clear customs faster without long waits in line.

Outside on the airfield, the aircraft parking area will expand by 58%. Three new airplane gates will bring the total to 15, giving airlines more flexibility and reducing delays.

The money will roll out strategically: $12.9 million this year, then larger amounts of $40.8 million in 2027, $38.9 million in 2028, and $30.3 million in 2029. The Pacific Airport Group, which manages the facility, worked with local officials to plan improvements that match the region's economic boom.

The Ripple Effect

El Bajío International Airport sits in a strategic spot in north-central Mexico, connecting the growing industrial corridor that includes Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosí. The expansion comes after the airport already invested $42.9 million in 2025, showing sustained commitment to growth.

With connections to over 21 national and international destinations, the upgraded airport will make it easier for businesses to bring in clients and for families to travel. The municipality of Silao, where the airport sits, is becoming a hub for automotive manufacturing and other industries that depend on smooth transportation links.
