Guernsey Trust Gives £150K for New Lung Cancer Test

Getting people to show up for cancer screening is harder than it sounds, but one charity just funded a solution that could save thousands of lives.

The Jon Moulton Charity Trust in Guernsey donated £150,000 to the University of Southampton to develop a urine test for lung cancer. The money will fund research to help people who skip traditional screening appointments, offering them an easier option that doesn't require travel or intimidating scans.

The need is urgent. Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK, with more than 50,000 new cases each year. Nearly 70% are caught too late, when treatment options shrink dramatically.

Dr. Victoria Goss leads the research at Southampton's Clinical Trials Unit. She explained that while NHS England launched a screening program in 2019 for at-risk adults, many people never participate. Some can't reach the mobile scanning units, others fear the procedure, and many simply don't have time.

Early detection changes everything. When lung cancer is caught in its earliest stages, patients have far better outcomes. The problem is that early symptoms are often vague or nonexistent, making screening the best defense.

The new urine test could complement existing programs by reaching people where they are. Instead of requiring an appointment at a specific location, participants could simply mail in a sample for analysis.

The Ripple Effect

This donation represents more than one research project. It's part of a growing relationship between Channel Island donors and Southampton's medical research. A Jersey couple recently donated £1 million to help launch the university's Institute for Medical Innovation, which will focus heavily on early diagnosis.

Katherine de Retuerto, who leads Southampton's philanthropy team, praised the longstanding partnership. The trust islanders place in the university's research continues to fuel innovations that could help people far beyond the Channel Islands.

The screening program has already transformed lung cancer detection for those who attend. Now researchers want to extend those benefits to everyone at high risk, regardless of their ability to visit a scanning unit.

Jon Moulton, the trust's founder, kept his statement simple: supporting studies that help more people access important screening is exactly what the charity aims to do.

Southampton researchers believe accessible screening methods will become the cornerstone of fighting lung cancer, turning a disease often caught too late into one detected early enough to beat.
