Guinea Launches 400 MW Solar Program With Battery Storage

Guinea just took a major step toward powering its future with clean, affordable energy for its people.

The West African nation's Ministry of Energy signed an agreement with RELP, a Belgium-based clean energy nonprofit, to launch a competitive procurement program for solar power and battery storage projects. The first phase alone targets 400 megawatts of solar capacity, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

This isn't just about building solar panels. It's about building the program the right way from the start.

RELP will provide technical, legal, and financial support to help Guinea design a transparent tender process. They're working alongside Guinea's National Directorate for Renewable Energy to draft documentation, train local experts, and set up financial safeguards that protect both investors and citizens.

"Clean, reliable, affordable electricity is the foundation of Guinea's ambitions," said Aminata Bocar Ba, RELP's Africa Engagement Manager. "But how it is procured matters just as much: transparent rules and a credible plan are what turn a single programme into a lasting market."

Guinea currently has about 330 megawatts of operational solar, mostly small commercial projects. This new program would more than double that capacity in its first phase alone.

The Ripple Effect spreads beyond Guinea's borders. RELP is already partnering with Ghana, Togo, and Senegal on similar renewable energy programs across West Africa. Ghana signed its agreement just last month for the country's first public renewables auction, including battery storage to keep the lights on even when the sun goes down.

These partnerships represent a new model for developing nations: getting expert help to build energy programs that are fair, transparent, and designed to grow. When procurement processes are credible and competitive, they attract better investors and create markets that last beyond a single project.

For Guinea, this means more than just electricity. Reliable power opens doors to education, healthcare, small businesses, and economic growth that transforms communities.
