Gulf Shores Opens High School With Scuba Science Classes

Students at Gulf Shores High School aren't just reading about marine biology—they're getting scuba certified and conducting underwater research as part of their science curriculum.

The brand-new Alabama campus opened its doors this week, marking the culmination of a community-driven vision that began nearly a decade ago. In 2015, Gulf Shores decided to break away from the Baldwin County School System to create its own district, giving local families more control over their children's education.

The Gulf Shores City School District officially launched in 2017. Now, nine years after that initial decision, the community's first high school is welcoming students with programs most teens only dream about.

"We have a class this semester where students will go out, they're all scuba certified through the school, and they'll do science research underwater," said Dr. Matthew Akin, a school district official. "You just don't see that everywhere."

The campus was built with innovation baked into every corner. Outdoor learning areas let students take lessons beyond four walls, while specialty labs give hands-on experience in engineering and culinary arts.

A state-of-the-art performing arts center provides space for students to explore creative passions. The design reflects a core belief: education should prepare students for life, not just tests.

Mayor Robert Craft says the new school represents the community's commitment to giving kids every opportunity to succeed. "The purpose was to create the kind of education our children deserve and help them be all that they can be," he explained.
