Half the World Now Demands Economy and Environment Together

People around the world have decided they're done choosing between a healthy planet and a healthy economy.

A survey of nearly 32,000 people across 15 major countries found that 48% now believe economic growth and environmental protection should receive equal priority. That's a threefold increase from 2017, signaling one of the fastest shifts in public opinion on record.

The change cuts across every type of economy. In the United Kingdom and United States, support for balancing both goals jumped roughly 45 percentage points. India, Nigeria, Brazil, and China saw similar massive increases.

Meanwhile, support for "growth at any cost" has collapsed. The survey, conducted by GlobeScan between July and August 2025, shows people are rejecting the old either-or mindset that dominated policy debates for decades.

World leaders are starting to catch up. In February 2026, over 150 governments approved a landmark report warning that GDP-focused growth has destroyed biodiversity. The report urged a shift toward models like circular economies and "inclusive wealth" that deliver prosperity while protecting nature.

The Ripple Effect

This global alignment creates powerful new possibilities. Policymakers now have far more public support than they might realize to pursue economic strategies that build in sustainability from the start, not as an afterthought.

Businesses face a clear message too. Customers across rich and poor countries alike expect companies to embed environmental protection into their core business models. Treating sustainability as a constraint or checkbox exercise no longer matches what people want.

For environmental groups, the data opens doors to broader coalitions. Instead of fighting against economic interests, they can work toward shared solutions that reflect what nearly half the world already believes is possible.

The shift matters because public opinion often moves faster than politics. While some political narratives still frame environmental protection as a brake on progress, voters have already moved past that outdated trade-off.
